Students Enrich Math & Science Skills

Last month, 200 third, fourth, and fifth grade Bridgeport students participated in a Math/Science Summer Enrichment Program at High Horizons and Multicultural Magnet Schools.

The program was designed to provide students with a variety of fun activities that promote an interest and enthusiasm for learning about mathematics and science. It also encouraged students to discover how to solve real-life problems using logical mathematics and reasoning abilities by means of science laboratories and computer technology.

The following are students’ feedback on their experiences in the Math/Science Summer Enrichment Program:

“I had a lot of fun dissecting a clam in Mr. Bell’s class.  However, it was a little frightening.  But it was something I’d like to experience again!”

                                                                                                     ~Tatyana, Grade 5

“My favorite experience here at camp was learning about our solar system and the nine planets that it consists of.  I enjoyed learning about the planet in which I live.  Learning is fun!”
                                                                                             ~Donna Marie, Grade 5

“I liked learning about ratios, and I really loved making math cubes.
Mrs. Beres really knows how to make class fun. This program rocks!”

                                                                                                     ~Sandra, Grade 5

“My favorite experience was the seed experiment because there were many different ways to find out which seeds would grow faster in a different condition or environment.”

                                                                                                    ~Ashley, Grade 3

“My favorite activity was the water molecule mobile because I learned what makes up water.”
                                                                                                ~Samantha, Grade 3

“I enjoyed coconut math because it was fun and I learned about exponents and decimals.”
                                                                                                     ~Fahim, Grade 4

“My favorite experience was growing plants in bottles because I learned about the water cycle inside a bottle."
                                                                                                 ~Nicholas, Grade 4

Program objectives were closely aligned with the mathematics and science curricula, along with identified areas of weakness on the Mastery Test.

Harding to host a Community Campaign

Harding High School Principal Carol D. Birks will lead a group of school administrators, parents, and community leaders throughout the Harding neighborhoods in a Community Campaign on Saturday, Aug. 25.  Volunteers will meet at Harding at 9:30 a.m. and disperse in teams throughout the surrounding neighborhoods in an effort to introduce Harding’s leadership team to the community, share the school’s mission, and demonstrate its commitment to student performance.

“The faculty and staff play an integral role in moving Warren Harding High School on the path of continuous improvement,” Birks said. “The purpose of this campaign is to introduce the leadership team and pledge our allegiance to improving student outcomes.”
